When you think of a camera, it is most likely that you picture the DSLR cameras that are prominently seen today. From professional photographers to amateur photography enthusiasts, DSLR cameras seem to be a top choice. However, there are other cameras too, such as Pint-And-Shoot cameras, Mirrorless cameras, Bridge cameras, and the DSLR cameras.

While point-and-shoot cameras and bridge cameras are considered ideal for beginners and DSLR is considered to be a professional camera, it is important to note that there is no ‘do-it-all’ camera. The purpose and use will mostly determine what kind of camera is best-suited for an individual.

Tips for Buying a New Camera

It becomes easier to decide the type, model and budget for a new camera when you keep these 5 points in mind:

5 Things to Know before Buying a New Camera

1. Myth of the Megapixels

It is quite a common misconception; greater the megapixels in the camera, the better will be the picture quality. It is not so.

Choose a camera with standard megapixels that is sufficient for your needs instead of buying the one with the highest megapixels. This will become unnecessarily expensive. Instead of looking for more megapixels, choose a camera with a better autofocus, sensor size and image stabilisation properties.

2. What Will You Use Your Camera for?

Before buying an expensive camera you should consider the question WHY you wish to buy it. Is your use limited to capturing family reunions, landscape photography or professional headshots for modelling profiles? This is what actually matters.

Point-and-shoot and bridge cameras are most useful when you wish to click pictures without using too much manual controls. Apart from this, the type of location where you want to use the camera will also help you to decide the type of camera you should buy.

3. Big isn’t always Best

Not every one of us needs the biggest and the most expensive camera. Proper skills and an eye for capturing details compensates significantly for the excess controls provided in the more advanced cameras. Unless you are a professional photographer, it is highly advised to select a less expensive and an easy operating camera to avoid  dealing with unnecessary complications.

Compact cameras may not have all the features as those seen in DSLR cameras but are easy to use and will serve your purpose well if you are not a professional.

4. Lenses are Important

Although you don’t need lenses in point-and-shoot and bridge cameras (Mega Zoom cameras), these are vital for professional photographers who use DSLR cameras. Lenses are responsible for setting the right focal length and aperture.

It is important to remember when buying a camera lens that the quality of the optical glass used in these will help you get better quality images. The type of lens depends on the kind of photography one is involved in.

5. Try before You Buy

Always remember to try your hand on a particular type of camera before rejecting it. You can borrow a friend’s camera if possible, or try renting it from numerous camera equipment renting agencies.
